ATTENDANCE/ABSENCE REPORTING

State Statute 118.15 (https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/statutes/statutes/118/15) requires that all children of school age be in school during all days and hours that school is in session. Students who must be out of school due to reasons of health or family emergency must return to school with a statement from parents, guardians, or a physician to the attendance office. Parents or guardians are expected to call the attendance office if their child will be out of school. Students who skip a class or a school day, or who exceed the allotted 10 days/80 hours of parent-excused days, are subject to disciplinary action. Every time a student reaches the equivalent of 5 unexcused absences (40 hours), a referral to the school resource officer will be made, and a truancy ticket (fine) will be issued. Attendance records transfer with the student to any middle school in the School District of Janesville.

It is essential that parents/guardians notify the attendance office at 608-743-5230 by 11:00 am each day of the absence. The Attendance Office is staffed from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm each day students are in session. Parents/guardians may leave a voicemail between 4:00 pm and 7:30 am. An absence for which the school has not received an acceptable telephone call or note within 48 hours of the absence will be considered truant.

When a family knows in advance that a student will be missing school, the attendance office should be contacted to obtain a “Planned Absence Form.”  This form should be completed and returned to the attendance office prior to the absence. Students are responsible for getting all assignments prior to pre-planned absences.

No student shall leave the building during school hours without permission from a parent/guardian. During school hours, administration shall release students only to parents, legal guardians, or a person designated by the parent or legal guardian (or to walk/drive/ride the bus with verbal permission of a parent/guardian). If students leave the building and return, they must check in through the attendance office upon return.

Students 18 years of age and older must also attend all assigned classes, study halls, advisory periods, and assemblies, and follow all school rules. A parent/guardian is required to report the absence of an 18-year-old student.
